Born in the year 1895 (BDM13534) to William Henry Williams and Annie Mockett (nee Mockett) in Korrumburra, Australia, Walter, aged 21 years and 1 month, worked in Korrumburra VIC as a store manager at the time he enlisted on the 22nd July 1916. His next of kin was his father, Williams William of Sunbury, Victoria.
He was assigned to the 6th Machine Gun Company.
Walter embarked on the HMAT A73 "Commonwealth" from Melbourne on 19th September1916 with his mate Charles Anderson of Diggers Rest.

Private Walter G. Williams of Sunbury inserted a notice in the Argus, 30 April 1918.
In loving memory of a true mate and comrade, Gunner C. Anderson (Charlie) of Diggers Rest, officially reported killed in action, somewhere in France, on the 28th March.

Walter transferred to the 5th Australian field butchery and was promoted to Corporal on the 15th March 1919.
Walter returned to Australia 20 July 1919.
He married in 1922 (BDM10955) to Mary Ann Millett who was born in 1893 (BDM790) who's parents were Thomas Patrick Millett and Mary Ann Anderson of Sunbury. Mary Ann’s father, Thomas, was the son of George and Susan nee Fitzpatrick from The Gap, Bald Hill Hotel. At the time of Thomas's death he owned The Royal Hotel Sunbury. The Millett family owned or run at one time many of the hotels in and around the Sunbury District including Digger Rest area. Mary Ann and her Sons are listed from the 1958 E/R Melton onwards. One son was listed as still living High Street 1980.
