Born in the year 1881 in Gisborne, Victoria, Joseph was a farmer of 34 years and 2 months old when he enlisted on the 13th July 1915. His next of kin was his mother, Mrs Annie Townsing. His father was Joseph Townsing and his mother's maiden name was Annie Frith. He had a brother named, "Frederick Townsing" born 1892. Joseph's religion was the Church of England and he enrolled as a private.
