Ernest Mark England Story

Private Ernest Mark England - Regimental number 3390

Born in the year Warracknabeal, Victoria, Ernest (Ernie) was a farmer of 19 years and 3 months old when he enlisted on the 23rd October 1916. His next of kin was his father, Harvey England of Diggers' Rest, Victoria. Ernest's religion was Methodist and his place of residence at the time of enlistment was a property on the Calder Hwy, Diggers Rest (his father purchased the land in 1911).

He was assigned to the 57th Battalion, 9th Reinforcement.

Ernest was wounded in action by gun shot wounds to his right arm and left leg on the 11th March 1918 in France. He also suffered influenza while in the field and was admitted to hospital on the 3rd March 1919.

Ernest was discharged on the 8th June 1920.

He was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal


Ernest built the store that resides on the Calder Hwy, opposite the Diggers Rest Railway Station in ~1920.

He fathered a son John (Jack) Harvey Campbell England on the 27 October 1921.
